Bench scoring helps Warriors in two point win over Dominican

SAN RAFAEL — The Stan State bench scored 63 percent of the points to help the Warriors overcome a poor shooting game as they were able to claim a 62-60 victory against Dominican at the CCAA/PacWest Challenge.

Mat Bradshaw led the Warriors with 13 points and Xavier Francois netted 12 with 10 rebounds to lead the Warriors to open the 2017-18 regular season. Both Bradshaw and Francois came off the bench to provide the spark. The deep bench also got quality play from Caleb Baskett with five rebounds, four assists and three steals while Vida Faniel scored six.

In all, the non-starters were 14-for-38 against the starters' 8-for-26 shooting from the field. Stan State also had a tough time from the arch, going 6 of 23.

Still the Warriors led by as many as 13 points in the first half. Dominican (0-1) got close in the second half and tied the game at 41-41. Stan State managed to pulled back up ahead with the inside game on three Francois layups midway in the second half. Then, just went the Penguins took over momentum with a four-point lead, a Bradshaw three-pointer got the Warriors within one.

Francois again helped out in the final minute, hitting a pair of free throws and pulled his own miss shot for a tip-in with 32 seconds left to give the Warriors their final lead at 61-60.

Ty Davis and Kyle Gouveia did finish with nine points apiece to pace Stanislaus.

Dominican was led by preseason All-PacWest pick Jeremiah Gray who made five three-pointers en route to a 25-point total. Christian Futch scored 17, but the rest of the team had 18 points combined.

The Warriors will face Academy of Art on Saturday, at Noon, to complete the two-game outing at the Conlan Center. Academy of Art lost to San Francisco State, 72-65.
