TURLOCK – The Stanislaus State women's basketball team was unable to keep up with Northwest Nazarene's quick offense as they faced defeat by the Nighthawks 66-76 at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena on Friday Night.
Now 0-1 overall, the Warriors made a run for the comeback in the second half but were unable to overcome the early deficit built by the Nighthawks (1-0).
Brittney Livingston led Stan State's offense with 15 points, banking 9 of 10 free throw shots.
Letty Infante scored 10 points for the Warriors and
Zahria Hendrix had nine points going 2-for-3 from the three-point arc.
Six Warriors had five or more rebounds against the Nighthawks,
Kyanna Davis leading with eight rebounds.
Erika Larsen tallied seven rebounds for the night and Livingston, Infante, Hendrix, and
Caprina Pipion each had five rebounds. Larsen also had three blocks for the Warriors and Hendrix led with three steals.
Northwest Nazarene took the lead early on, leaving the Warriors scoreless for the first four and a half minutes of the game (0-7). A lack of shooting precision disallowed Stan State to reduce the point gap, sending them into half time with a 25-point deficit (17-42).
The Warriors gave NNU a run for their money in the second half, improving their shooting percentage from 16 percent to 38.9 percent by making 17 out of their 20 free-throw attempts (85 percent). Livingston went 6-for-6 behind the free throw line in the second half and Pipion was 4-for-6.
As a team the Warriors shot 29.5 percent from the field and 70.3 percent from the free-throw line.
Avery Albrecht was the top shooter for the Nighthawks with 16 points, and Lexi Tubbs and Carly Parker each scored 12 points. Tubbs led with 11 rebounds and Raquel Jardine had 10 rebounds.
The CCAA/GNAC Challenge will continue tomorrow afternoon with a game between Cal State Monterey Bay and Northwest Nazarene beginning at 1:30 p.m. The Warriors will take on Concordia University at approximately 3:30 p.m.
