FRESNO — Tonight it was
Vida Faniel's turn to shine.
The junior forward led the Stanislaus State men's basketball team with 22 points — 10 of them from the free throw line — as the Warriors handled Fresno Pacific, 83-69, Tuesday night at the FPU Events Center.
Faniel came off the bench to become the fourth different Warrior to lead the team in scoring in five games. Faniel did so by getting himself to the line and converting the free throw, hitting all 10 attempts. He was also 5 of 9 from the field with two three-pointers in 28 minutes of action as a non-starter. He also had three of the team's 11 assists.
Also in double-digits in scoring were
Ty Davis with 16 points and
Andy Cleaves with 13 points.
Kyle Gouveia chipped in 10 points with team-leading eight rebounds. Davis also had three assists.
Gouveia contributed from the foul line as well, going 6 for 10. As a team, Stan State made 27 of 38 free throws while FPU only had 15 attempts (the Sunbirds made 11).
Fresno Pacific (1-5) committed 22 turnovers (to Stan State's 10) and the Warriors used them to scored 30 points off turnovers.
However, the Sunbirds had the lead at halftime, 44-37, and actually led by 10 one-minute into the second half on a Jake Straughan three-pointer. FPU would lead by 10 again at 60-50 before Stan State rallied.
The Warriors went on an 11-0 run to take a brief lead and the teams went back and forth until another Stan State run that started at 66-66. A 10-2 spurt capped by a three-point play by
Caleb Baskett gave the Warriors a 76-68 en route to their win.
Straughan finished with 25 points including six three-pointers to lead Fresno Pacific.
Stanislaus State travels to face No. 16 Chico State on Saturday in Chico. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.
