ROHNERT PARK — The Stanislaus State men's basketball team keeps finding ways to win. Saturday night, it was the strong play of
Kyle Gouveia in the paint and the team's ability to get to the line and sink free throws that led to a 67-57 win over Sonoma State.
Gouveia scored a season-high 20 points — his best points total in a CCAA game since February 27, 2016 — as he led the Warriors to their fourth consecutive victory. Stan State is now 8-2 overall and 5-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
The Warriors are off to their best start during the CCAA era, which started with the 1998-99 season. No other team started the season 8-2.
Stanislaus State also swept the season series over Sonoma State with two wins in two weeks. The Warriors beat SSU at home on Nov. 28, 75-67.
Even though the Seawolves out-rebounded the Warriors 30-28, Gouveia, the 6-foot-8 center dominated the inside game. He scored seven of his eight baskets on layups with the other a short jumper in the paint. In the end, he was 8 of 11 and also made four free throws.
For the game, the Warriors out-scored Sonoma State (3-6, 1-4 CCAA) 30-16 in the paint. In fact, 14 of the Warriors' 20 field goals made were layups. There was also a
Ty Davis dunk.
After trailing by nine points when Sonoma State used a 5-0 run to start the second half building on a 34-30 lead, the Warriors took charge. Stan State ran off 10 straight points, capped by a
Vida Faniel three-pointer.
Then, the Warriors could capitalize on their trips to the line. Stan State converted 15 of 18 free throws in the last 10 minutes of the game to pull ahead. The Warriors also held SSU without a field goal in the final 3:23 after Jackson Gion made a three-pointer to get within four points.
Faniel and
Andy Cleaves each chipped in nine points. As a team the Warriors shot 47.6 percent of the game (mostly layups).
The Warriors won't have to play a CCAA game again until Friday, Dec. 29. They will play a pair of non-conference games on Dec. 16 (at Cal Maritime) and Dec. 18 (home versus Seattle Pacific) before the New Years Eve weekend CCAA contests.
