Stanislaus State men drop another heartbreaker to end season

HAYWARD — It was a game between two teams trying to end the season with a victory after a struggling year. So someone has to win to snap the skid.

Unfortunately for the Stanislaus State Warriors, it was yet another heartbreaking defeat as they wrapped up the 2016-17 campaign with nine consecutive losses to fall to 6-21 overall and 3-17 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Cal State East Bay, which came into the night with its own eight-game losing streak, scored 20 of the game's final 26 points to turn a 12-point deficit into a two-point, 68-66 win.

Micah Dunhour's high arching long two-pointer with 3.1 seconds left completed the Pioneers comeback (13-15, 6-14 CCAA). After a Paramvir Singh missed three-pointer as time winds down, Dunhour grabbed the rebound and took it out to the top of the circle. With a defender in his face, Dunhour launched a senior night prayer — and it was answered.

Vondel Faniel scored his career high 27 points with 12 rebounds in losing effort. He had dominated the inside, going 12 of 16 from the field. All but one of those shots were outside of the paint.

Kaelen Mitchell chipped in 11 points with six rebounds and Kyle Gouveia added eight points.

For CSUEB, Dunhour finished with 28 points and 15 rebounds. He went 10 of 14 from the free throw line and ended his career with that game-winner. Druce Asah added 15 points for the Pioneers.

The Warriors had led from the tip with slight leads of about four to six points until late in the first half. A late push from the free throw line made it 32-25 at the break. Stan State would extend that lead into a 12-point advantage with a little 9-2 run early in the second half to make it 44-32.

Stan State would lead by 12 twice more, with the final time at 6:34 on a Faniel dunk. But, that was when East Bay started its charge on a 20-6 run.
