TURLOCK — The schedule makers didn't do the up-start Warriors any favors this season. Stanislaus State had to open the CCAA season with the cream-of-the-crop of the West. Well, the good news is that the best is out of the way.
Unable to keep up with the well-oiled machine that is Chico State Baseball, the Warriors suffered two losses, 4-0 and 9-3, on Sunday as the Wildcats swept the season-opening series.
Stanislaus State, now 10-5 overall and 0-4 in CCAA play, kept up with Chico for three games — but the Wildcats got the upper-hand with their pitching and situational hitting. Chico State improved to 11-4, 4-0 CCAA as one of three teams to start the conference season undefeated (UC San Diego and Cal Poly Pomona).
Chico State got its runs in Sunday's opener with two ground outs, a hit-batsman and a single. Then in the series finale, the Wildcats scattered 10 hits and scored at will while leaving just five runners on base. Chico State also swiped seven bases in the twinbill.
In game one,
Stewart Alexander was solid in the first five innings before getting into trouble in the sixth. A single, two walks and two beanballs resulted in Chico's second run. The Wildcats would tag on single runs in the seventh and ninth innings while keeping Stan State runners from coming around the bases.
Austin Fitzpatrick had two hits with a double and
John Holleran also doubled to account for the Warrior offense.
In the nightcap, Chico State scored twice in the first and chased Stanislaus starter
Micah Hall after three innings. The Warriors made it 4-2 in the the third on a RBI triple by
Kert Woods, who later scored on a
Kyle Nixon grounder. However, the Wildcats put up three runs in the fifth to control the game.
Gino Franceschetti went 2-for-4 and Woods finished with a 2-for-3 game.
Things won't get any easier as Sonoma State visits next weekend for a four-game set. Sonoma State won three of four games over San Francisco State to start the season 6-1.
