This Week's Opponents
Cal State San Marcos COUGARSÂ (11-8, 8-6Â CCAA)
Series Notes: This is the one and only meeting this season between the teams. Since joining the conference, CSUSM has won both previous games against Stanislaus State in 2016.
Last Time We Met... was last Jan. 23 in San Marcos in a 64-50 Cougars win. Stan State shot just 30.3 pecrent in the game down at MiraCosta College in Oceanside.
About the Cougars: Cal State San Marcos snapped a three-game skid with a non-conference win over West Coast Baptist, 93-68, last Tuesday. They haven't played since that date … Ethan Alvano averaged 17.0 points per game and Joe Boyd averages a double-double with 13.6 points and 10.4 rebounds per contest. The 6-foot-8 Boyd is the CCAA's top rebounder … CSUSM has the CCAA's top offense, averaging 80.6 points a game. They are, however, the second worse on defense giving up 74.8 points per game.
Single Game Weeks
In a rarely during the conference season, the Warriors will only have one game this week when Cal State San Marcos visits. The last time the Warriors have a single-game week schedule was in the preseason when they hosted Fresno Pacific on Monday, Dec. 19, just before the holiday break. Stan State had opened the CCAA schedule on Dec. 2 with a single game at Cal State Dominguez Hills.Â
Overtime Thriller
Inside The Swamp last Friday night, in front of a loud SF State home crowd and a local TV audience, the Warriors show up to play and gave the high-flying Gators a challenge. Stan State led by as many as 13 points in the second half before SF State rallied to force overtime.
Good Team Efforts
In that near upside game in San Francisco, the Warriors had four players in double digits in scoring with Vondel Faniel posting another double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds). Jaelen Ragsdale equaled his career-high with 20 points, followed by Kaelen Mitchell's 17 before he fouled out. Richard Medina also chipped in seven.
Snapping the 4-Game Skid
The Warriors have lost four straight games for the second time this season. The good news is they have not lost five straight games this season. They ended the previous four-game skid with a win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Jan. 13, at home inside Fitzpatrick Arena.
Still a Top D
The Warriors remain one of the better defensive teams in the CCAA, ranking fourth in opponent's field goal percentage (.401) and allowing just 65.9 points a game for fifth best.
Winning at Rebounding
Stan State is the third best rebounding team in the CCAA, averaging 36.5 per game. The Warriors tops in the CCAA with 26.3 defensive rebounds per game. They also second best in holding opponents to just 29.9 boards per game … Vondel Faniel is second in the CCAA in total rebounding (9.0 rpg) and offensive rebounding (3.5 rpg) … Kyle Gouveia is 11th with 6.3 rebounds per game.
A Fight for Boards
Thursday night's game features the top two rebounders in the conference with Cal State San Marco's Joe Boyd and Vondel Faniel. During CCAA games, Boyd averages 11.5 rebounds (8.9 defensive boards) and Faniel averages 9.0 (3.5 offensive rebounds).
Freshman of the year?
Jaelen Ragsdale could make a case for CCAA Freshman of the Year as he's had a stellar rookie season. Ragsdale is averaging 9.1 points per game and has scored 20 points twice with nine double-digit scoring game. Since he became a starter, he's scored in double digits in 9 of 13 games while averaging 12.1 points per game (team high 31.3 minutes per game). He's also prolific at the free throw line in these 13 games, hitting on 84.9 percent of attempts (45-for-53).
Oh, That 60-point Mark
Stan State continues to struggle to get a victory when scoring less than 60 points. The Warriors are now 0-13 in those games while going 6-3 in games when they score 61 or more points.
Extra Time Affairs
Friday's overtime game was just the team's second in 2016-17 — and they lost both games. In 2015-16, the Warriors played in five overtime games with a 4-1 record, including a triple OT win over Humboldt State (108-100) on Feb. 19.
Reynolds to be in CSUSB HOF
Head coach Larry Reynolds is being inducted into the Cal State San Bernardino Athletics Hall of Fame in May, as CSUSB announced on Wednesday. Reynolds won three CCAA titles, two NCAA West Region championships and four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances in five seasons at CSUSB. The Coyotes were 110-35 under Reynolds, a four-time CCAA Coach of he Year honoree. [See page 4 for more information on Larry Reynolds]
Holding on to Hope
Mathematically, the Warriors are not out of the confernce tournament race, just yet. The Warriors are four games behind eighth-place Cal State L.A. with five games to play. Stan State is looking for its first bid in the CCAA tournament since 2015.
