CHICO — A number of Stanislaus State track and field athletes posted personal records or seasonal bests on Saturday as the Warriors competed at the Wildcats Invitational at Chico State on Saturday.
The day was highlighted by an improved NCAA provisional mark toss by
Lindsay McKee in the women's hammer throw. She won the event on Saturday with a new season best of 183 feet, 7 inches to increase her national lead.
In the women's 5000-meter run, in a race full of Warriors from Stan State and Williams Jessup, the Stan State Warriors took advantage of the resting Chico State distance team to come in 1-2 in the event.
Clarissa Morales and
Cynthia Mejia ran together and finished side-by-side in 18:50.30 and 18:50.51, respectively.
There were also a lot of quality times turned in by the sprinters and hurdlers.
The Akanji twins blazed through their respective events with
Michelle Akanji finishing fifth in the 100-meter dash in 12.57 seconds. She had ran a season-best of 12.50 in the prelims earlier in the day to qualify. Michelle capped off her day with a time of 25.91 seconds in the 200-meter dash, the fastest time she's posted in the event since last April in a wind-aided run at Warrior Stadium.
As for
Mercy Akanji, her season-fast time of 59.41 seconds in the 400-meter run was good for fourth place.
Speaking of the 400-meter run, fresh off the basketball courts,
Caprina Pipion made an impressive 2017 outdoor track debut with a second-place time of 58.67 seconds and a third best time of the day in the 400-meter hurdles (1:07.77).
Iesha Boyd was a speedster in the 200-meter dash with a season best time of 25.43.
On the men's side,
Alonzo Easter paced a season best 55.64 seconds in the men's 400-meter hurdles. He also posted a 2017 best of 15.05 in a 110-hurdles qualifying heat. In the 400-meter run, Rhomel Clark posted a second place finish in a career best of 50.30 seconds.
In middle distance races,
Ramon Vargas has a huge PR, finishing the 1500-meter run in 4:01.04, shaving off more than six seconds from his previous best. In the women's 800-meter run,
Harleen Pabla ran the race for the first time and placed third in 2:22.39 while
Clarissa Morales turned in a PR of 2:23.08.
Other Stan State throwers also had a nice day in Chico, led by
Breanna Lowther, whose PR of 147-feet in the discus throw put her second in the standings.
Juan Contreras posted three top three finishes with a second in discus (136-5), third in shot put (45-5 ¾) and third in hammer (175-2).
Eric Bejaran finished second in the hammer with a toss of 184-2.
Additional highlights included personal bests by
Zayn Largent in the pole vault (14-7 ¼) and
Mi'Shaye Venerable with a seasonal best in the long jump (17-3 ½).
Franchesca Shepard cleared 5-1 ¾ in the high jump and was in a four-way tie for third.
