TURLOCK — The Warriors scored 21 more runs on Friday en route to a doubleheader sweep over Cal State San Bernardino to extend their winning streak to three games as they continue to fight for a CCAA tournament spot.
Behind more excellent pitching, the Stan State offense scattered 25 hits and capitalized on seven Coyote errors to win 10-3 and 11-3. The Warriors improve to 23-14 overall and 13-13 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. With eight more conference games to play, the Warriors are looking to move into the third spot in the CCAA North before season's end.
The Warriors are now just two games behind third place Cal State Monterey Bay, which split with SF State on Friday.
Cal State San Bernardino dropped its fifth straight CCAA game and is now 10-27 overall and 8-18 in league play.
There were a number of hitting stars for Stan State on Friday — led by
Nathan Chunn in the first game (3-for-5 with two doubles.
Nick Ippolito had three hits and drove in two runs and
Kyle Nixon had two hits in the series opener. In the nightcap,
Adam Nascimento delivered a two-run double to compliment two hits by Nixon,
Austin Fitzpatrick and
Ethan Utler.
Every Warrior starter in the lineup had at least a hit in the twinbill with all nine players reaching base in game one. Nixon also extended his on-base streak to 20 games.
On the mound, both starters again turned in quality outings.
Jordan Kron threw seven innings and gave up three runs on nine hits with five strikeouts to earn his fifth win. In the nightcap,
Cody Kruip struck out a career-high eight batters in six innings of work. He allowed three runs on four hits and walked three to improved to 4-3.
Four Warriors came out of the bullpen and completed shutdown the Coyotes. Fitzpatrick,
Ian Chandler,
Jarrett Veiga and
Micah Hall combined to pitch five hitless and scoreless innings with seven strikeouts.
The Warriors have scored 10 or more runs in each of their last three games.
Saturday's series finale is an early start with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
