Warrior vollleyball fights to end streak, suffers loss to CSULA

TURLOCK -  Fighting to record its first win of the season, the Stanislaus State volleyball team battled it out with Cal State L.A., losing in four sets on Saturday night at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.

Grasping the first set victory, the Warriors came out with a 25-23 win. Stan State then gave up three straight, 22-25, 20-25, and 16-25. Adding another CCAA loss to their record the Warriors are now 0-10, 0-2 in conference while the Golden Eagles are 6-4, 2-0 in league.

Rachel Klopfer was once again Stan State's kill leader with 18 kills (.304), the only Warrior to reach double digits. Playing outstanding defense in the back row was libero Kaitlyn Iwamoto who led with 23 digs. Jordan Tilley tallied 15 digs and Sara Schell dug 13. Breanna Cannon and Tilley split time running the Stan State offense, Cannon with 22 assists and Tilley with 17 assists.

Coming out with fire the Warriors played a strong first set, attacking aggressively from all areas of the court and playing quick defense. A five-point run at the end of the set gave Stan State the lead before Klopfer put the ball away to decide the set. After a defeat in set two, the Warriors headed into the intermission with hope, but ran out of gas in the final two sets.

A five-point Golden Eagle run (1-5) to start off set three, and a four-point run nearing the end (17-21) kept the Warriors from seeing the win. Tough serving by CSULA and unstoppable attacking from the middle prevented Stan State from prolonging the match and taking home the win.

Middle Blocker Daisia Labrie led the Golden Eagle's front row with 23 kills and Karla Santos followed with 17 kills. Bailey Anderson facilitated CSULA's offense with 36 assists and libero Jeshmarie Suarez led with 18 digs, followed by Santos with 17 digs.

Next week Stan State will travel down south to take on UC San Diego on Friday and Cal State San Marcos on Saturday.
