TURLOCK — In a match that was moved 115 miles to the "cooler" Central Valley, the Stanislaus State women's soccer team stay hot to defend its home turf as the Warriors blanked Dominican, 3-0, on a scorching summer Saturday night.
All of the scoring action came within eight minutes during the second half with goals by
Mayah Chambers,
Bella Rivera and
Jenna Zuniga as the Warriors improved to 2-0-0 on the season.
The contest was originally scheduled for a 4 p.m. start in San Rafael on field turf at Kennelly Field. Excessive heat warnings in the San Francisco Bay Area prompted the institutions' decision to move the match to Turlock where the teams can play on grass, at night. Bay Area temperature reached low 100s and temperature on artificial turf would be much higher at field level. Game time temperature in Turlock was 95 degrees.
The depth of the Warriors and the familiarity of the warmer weather finally prevailed in the second half after the teams played to an uneventful opening 45. Teams only took four total shots (three by Stan State) in the first half.
After the break, the Warriors started to attack deeper in the zone and that paid off in the 62nd minute.
Sadie Montague made a great run down the far side to chase down a ball heading towards the end line. She sent a spot-on cross into the box for a header goal by Chambers. Head coach
Gabriel Bolton called it a "Dream Goal" of his since it was a left-back defender assisting on a score by the right-back defender.
"I told the team that the left back crossing it to the right back for a goal is my dream goal. It takes an incredible level of possession and movement to accomplish," Bolton said.
"I saw it come out and I was going to take a shot but I thought I better get a cross off," Montague said. "It was almost better feeling to get the assist then to score a goal." Montague and fellow defender
Natalie Larson were the only two field players to play all 90 minutes.
The Chambers goal opened the flood gates as Rivera scored on a long distance blast in the 62nd minute to make it 2-0. Finally, at 69:06, Zuniga nets her second goal in as many games by collecting a touch from
Hannah Rogers on a point-blank shot. Rogers had made an attempt from a
Julia Cummings cross from the corner.
"This team just has a spark that I love. They bring such a spirit and energy to everything they do," Bolton added.
Bolton also attributed the great efforts of goalkeeper
Haley Crook as well as Larson,
Kassandra Le and
Hannah Rogers. The Stanislaus defense recorded its second shutout and even more impressively allowed just one Dominican shot-on-goal.
Stanislaus State will play its third match in five nights on Monday when the Warriors host Notre Dame de Namur at 7 p.m.
