WAIPAHU, Hawai'i —
Khalil Kirksey scored a late goal to break the tie as the Stanislaus State men's soccer team defeated host Hawaii Pacific in O'ahu Thursday evening.
Kirksey netted the game-winner with less than five minutes left to play to help the Warriors improve to 1-1-1 overall . Stan State begin the two-match trip to the Hawaiian Island with a hard-fought victory.
In their two previous matches to start the 2017 season, the Warriors competed and had opportunities to win each time before losing in overtime and taking a draw in extreme heat.
Thursday, just when it appeared that the match was going into overtime once again, Stan State prevailed. Kirksey intercepted a pass from a Shark and deposited in the net at 85:42 for the win.
Luis Hernandez, returning to the lineup for the first time this season recovering from a injury, scored the team's first goal in the 57th minute on a free kick for the lead.
HPU (1-1-0) answered with a Lucas Libbra score 22 seconds after the Hernandez goal on a quick run from the restart kickoff.
Patrick Colombana played the full 90 and picked up four saves for the win.
Stan State now has five different players with a goal each so far this season.
The Warriors face Chaminade for the first time in program history on Saturday. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. Hawai'i Time (5 p.m. Pacific).
