Stanislaus State snaps UC San Diego streak with overtime victory

LA JOLLA — Never mind that the Warriors made just two of 15 from long distance and couldn't sink foul shots for most of the night against UC San Diego.

They made baskets and converted on free throws when it counted the most as Stanislaus State defeated the Tritions, 76-66, in overtime Thursday night at the RIMAC Arena.

The Warriors snapped a four-game skid in the series against UC San Diego while improving their 2017-18 record to 12-6 overall and 7-5 in league play. UC San Diego, which entered the weekend as the hottest team in the CCAA, ended a six-game winning streak to fall to 12-6, 9-3.

Stan State out-scored the Tritions 19-9 in overtime to post its eighth win away from home. The Warriors are now 8-2 in away and neutral site games this season.

Vida Faniel led the Warriors with 20 points — his third 20-point game this season, the first not on a Tuesday. Xavier Francois scored 14, Ty Davis netted 12 and Andy Cleaves had 10.

In the extra period, the Warriors shot 62.5 percent on 5 of 8 shooting and made 8 of 9 free throws. UC San Diego was just 28.6 percent and missed all five three-point tries.

Cleaves scored six of his 10 points in overtime, including two free throws to extend his consecutive free throws made streak to 22.

For the game, the Tritons committed 18 turnovers to the Warriors' nine. The Stan State bench outscored the Tritions' 48 to 9.

Stan State was just 2-for-15 (.133) from the three-point arch Thursday. The Warriors were 1-for-11 in treys against UCSD back on Dec. 29.

UC San Diego was without the conference's No. 2 scorer in Christian Bayne as the potent offense faltered against the Warriors. UCSD came in as the second-best scoring team in the conference at 75.5 points per game.

The Warriors look to take-down another high scoring team on Saturday when they travel to face Cal State San Marcos. The Cougars (13-3, 8-2 CCAA) average a CCAA-best 82.3 points per game.
