HAYWARD — The Warriors are 2-0.
And
Vasilije Saraba can play.
The junior forward followed his Warrior debut with a solid encore performance as Stanislaus State defeated Notre Dame de Namur 75-61 Saturday night at the Pioneer Challenge, hosted by Cal State East Bay.
Saraba led all players with 18 points and eight rebounds as the 6-foot-7 beast proved to be tough to stop. Saraba was 6 for 10 from the floor, made a three-pointer and converted on all five of his free throw attempts to lead the offense. Oh, and he also had three assists and a steal.
Rolaun Dunham scored 13 points with four treys and
Ty Davis added 12 points to pace Stan State, which opened the year 2-0 for the first time since 2014.
Stanislaus State opened the game taking only three-point shots, hitting on 4-of-6 for a 12-6 lead. However the tight battled swung NDNU's way and the Argonauts lead by as many as eight points in the first half.
Early in the second half, the Warriors used a 9-0 run to build a 10-point lead and held a comfortable margin after that.
Fred Lavender's three-pointer at 5:44 gave Stan State its biggest lead at 62-46.
In the end the Warriors shot 44.8 percent and out-rebounded NDNU 34-26.
In two games, Saraba has nearly averaged a double-double. He had 22 points and 11 rebounds in Friday's opener against Holy Names. Saraba is now averaging 20 points and 9.5 rebounds with a 61.9 percent shooting after two games.
The Warriors will take on Division I Pacific Tuesday night in Stockton at 7 p.m. before an early-season defining road trip to Denver where they will take on Metro State and Regis.
