LOS ANGELES — The Stanislaus State baseball team scattered 27 hits on Saturday as the Warriors split the twinbill with Cal State L.A. winning game one 10-3 before being edged out 8-7 in the nightcap.
The Warriors went 2-1 in the three-game set to win their second series to open the 2018 season. Stan State improved to 4-2 and will open CCAA play at home on Friday against Chico State.
Cody Kruip and
Jack Large each had five hits and
Andrew Wheat went 3-for-4 with two doubles in the doubleheader. Stanislaus batters hit .351 with 27 hits, six doubles and a homer in two games on the day. Large hit his second dinger in consecutive games with a solo shot in the eighth of the first game.
In game one on Saturday, the Warriors scored six runs in the seventh and eighth innings to turn a 4-3 game into the 10-3 blow-out victory. Stanislaus capitalized on two walks, two hit-batsmen and an error to plate four runs as the Warriors sent 10 batters to the plate in the seventh. Kruip went 3-for-5 while Large and
Nathaniel Thompson each had two hits. Large homers and doubled in the game.
Tyler Murphy earned win on the mound after five innings of work. He gave up three runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks. The Stan State bullpen of
Kevin Hahn,
Jarrett Veiga and
Evan Duran, threw four shutout innings and gave up just four hits.
Cal State L.A. (1-2) scored four runs in the second inning of the nightcap for an early 4-0 lead to chase starter
Stewart Alexander.
The Warriors rallied back down 6-2 by scoring four runs in the seven to tie the game. Five hits in the frame, including a two-run double by
Nikko Delgado and a RBI double by Wheat highlighted the inning.
The Golden Eagles would push two across in the seventh with Stanislaus getting a run back in the eighth before coming up short.
