TURLOCK — Humboldt State scored 59 points in the second half to erase a 20-point Stanislaus State halftime lead as the visiting Lumberjacks shocked the Warriors, 81-78, Saturday night inside the Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.
Unfortunately, the Warriors suffer the tough loss to split the home weekend and fell to 15-9 overall and 10-8 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Stan State drops back to sixth place in the CCAA standings with two regular season weekends to go. The Lumberjacks took a little while to get going but extended their winning streak to three and improved to 9-15, 6-12.
Vida Faniel and
Kaelen Mitchell each scored 19 points in losing effort. Together they scored 18 points in the second half.
Xavier Francois added 13 and
Andy Cleaves scored 12 with nine rebounds.
Kameron Curl led five Lumberjacks in double figures with 20 points. He was 9 for 9 from the free throw line — all of them in the second half. In fact, HSU was 18 of 22 at the line in the second half after getting to the line for just four free throws in the opening half. Humboldt State shot 63.3 percent in the second half after going just 8 of 26 in the first half.
Stan State ran out to a 9-0 lead early and after a pair of HSU free throws, Faniel nailed a trey at 16:02 to make it 12-2. The Warriors also out-scored Humboldt 14-3 in the final five minutes in the first half to set-up the 20-point intermission score, 42-22.
The Warriors had a 20-point lead four minutes into the second when Faniel made another one of his five three-pointers. But HSU made a run, quickly taking away the Stanislaus momentum with a 9-0 run. HSU would eventually take its first lead at 77-76 with 1:29 left to play. Four HSU free throws down the stretch secured the win for the visitors.
Stan State was also in foul trouble for most of the game. The Warriors were whistled for 21 fouls versus HSU's 16. The Jacks bench outscored the Warriors' 37-18.
