TURLOCK —
Andrew Wheat's hot hitting was also timely on Saturday as his run-scoring double broke a stalemate as Stanislaus State beat No. 9 ranked Chico State, 3-1, to even the series.
More great pitching by both clubs were on display on another glorious afternoon at Warrior Baseball Field — this time with the Warriors staff coming out with the offense capitalizing on a huge Chico miscue.
Both teams are now 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association as the series shifts to Chico for games three and four on Sunday.
With the score at 1-1, Wheat's RBI double in the seventh inning scored
Austin Fitzpatrick as the eventual game-winner.
Braeden Oki followed Wheat with a double to almost the exact same spot in right field to make it 3-1. The rally started with Fitzpatrick reaching on an error by the Wildcats' second baseman.
With the win, the Warriors ended a six-game losing streak against Chico State. It was Stan State's first win over Chico State since May 8, 2016.
Much like Friday night's game, the starting pitchers dueled. For the Warriors, it was
Tyler Murphy who at times labored through his start but was also brilliant in spots. He struck out five, walked three and gave up just an unearned run on five hits in six innings. On the other side, Hilario Tovar suffered the tough loss despite fanning 10 Warriors. He gave up three runs — two of them unearned — on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Jarrett Veiga threw two shutout innings and allowed two hits with two strikeouts to pick up the win. Despite a leadoff single in the ninth,
Chase Wheatcroft got three consecutive outs, including a strikeout to end the game for his fourth save of the season.
Stan State had tied the game in the sixth on a key hit by
John Holleran. His two-out single up the middle scored Wheat to tie the game.
Jack Large and Oki also each had two hits.
So far in the series, Wheat is 5-for-7 after going 3-for-3 Friday night. He's now batting .625 (10-for-16) with a .813 slugging percentage so far this season.
Chico State was 1-for-20 with runners in scoring position in two games at Turlock.
