TURLOCK – As Stan State honored their three seniors in their final game as Warriors, the Stanislaus State women's basketball team earned a respectable win over Cal State Monterey Bay 64-52 on Saturday night at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.
With their final game in the books the Warriors ended the 2017-18 season 11-17 overall and 8-14 in the CCAA. The Otters were 5-17 and 6-21 to conclude the year.
In her final home game
Erika Larsen led Stan State with 17 points and she also tallied eight rebounds.
Kyanna Davis scored 13 points and
Caprina Pipion had 10 points. Pipion led the Warriors with 12 rebounds, a new personal best, and Davis grabbed seven rebounds.
Zahria Hendrix and
Caitlin Keding each has three steals, and Hendrix and
Angelica Baylon each had four assists. Davis led the Warriors in all with six assists.
As a team the Warriors shot 39.7 percent from the field, 31.3 percent from the three-point arc, and 75 percent from the three-point line.
The Stan State seniors came out hot for their final game, each making a basket to put the first six points on the board. Stan State continued to cruise ahead, taking an 11-point lead on the Otters (13-2). CSUMB made two three-pointers before the end of the quarter but the Warriors remained ahead (15-8).
To start the second quarter Keding put three more points on the board with a layup and free-throw. Larsen made the first three-pointer of her career, lighting up the gym with praise. Fighting their way back the Otters came within three points of Stan State (23-26), and were only four behind at the end of the quarter (32-28).
Four consecutive Warrior layups to start the third period gave Stan State a comfortable 12-point lead. A couple of Otter three-pointers once again put them just three points away, but three shots by Pipion kept the Warriors in the lead before the end of the quarter (51-39).
Stan State refused to give up their senior night victory, keeping the Otters at bay for the final 10 minutes of the game. Cal State Monterey Bay was hot at the three-point line, but the Warriors played a steady game and remained strong offensively to take the win.
The Otters leading scorer was Aubri Smith with 16 points and Courtney Keaton scored 11 points. Keaton led the game with 16 rebounds and Smith had seven assists. As a team Cal State Monterey Bay shot 33.9 percent from the field, 29.7 percent from the three-point arc, and 50 percent from the free-throw line.
