LA JOLLA — The Stanislaus State men's basketball Warriors played their hearts out in a game ultimately decided on the foul line.
UC San Diego converted on 29 of 31 free throws — former Warrior Christian Bayne had 16 of those — as the host Tritons end the Warriors' season in an 82-81 double overtime battle.
"The guys left everything out there tonight. It was an incredible effort and we just came up a bit short," co-head coach
Paul Trevor said.
Teams combined for 61 free throw attempts as they were called for 48 fouls. But UC San Diego had more chances in extra time, hitting on 10 of 11 free throws (the only miss was on purpose) despite shooting just 3 of 11 from the floor in OT.
Bayne scored six of those free throws in overtime and made a three-pointer with :03 left while being fouled. He front-rim the free throw on purpose to allow the clock to run out as a Stan State desperation shot sailed short.
The foul count was 7-3 against the Warriors in OT.
Still, the epic battle was close and exciting. Teams tied 13 times and there were 11 lead changes.
Stanislaus cashed in at the charity stripe, too, as the Warriors made 26 of 30 attempts.
Vida Faniel was 8-for-8 as he broke — and extended — the school record for consecutive free throws made. He ended the season with 41 straight free throws.
Faniel finished with 15 points with seven assists.
Andy Cleaves made 4 of 5 three-point tries to finish with a team-best 22 points. He also had five rebounds, five assists and two blocks.
Ty Davis had 15 and
Xavier Francois chipped in 13 points.
"I am so proud of this team and especially the seniors for how they competed tonight and throughout the year," Trevor said. "They have re-energized this program and set the foundation for where this program is heading."
UC San Diego was led by the two Christians. Bayne finished with 25 points with five steals and eight rebounds. Christian Oshita had 29 points and was 5 of 8 from the 3-point line before fouling out.
The Tritons advance to face Chico State Friday in Pomona in a semifinal game of the CCAA Tournament. San Francisco State matches up against Cal Poly Pomona in the other semifinal.
The Warriors end the season 17-12 overall, the best record since the 2014-15 season (18-11).
