Warriors split tough road trip after setback at San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO — The Warriors were not able to continue the momentum it gained two nights ago when they upset No. 19 Cal Poly Pomona as they dropped to Cal State San Bernardino, 76-55, Saturday evening.

Stanislaus State couldn't put together much offense and was not able to stop the host Coyotes as the Warriors suffered their biggest loss of the season. The Warriors split the tough weekend road trip and are now 14-8 overall and 9-7 in CCAA play. They won at Pomona Thursday night for the first time in 10 years.

The red-hot Cal State San Bernardino team won its fourth straight and moved up to 9-8 in CCAA play, just a 1/2 game behind the Warriors in seventh place. CSUSB is 11-10 overall. The Coyotes avenged a 96-91 loss to Stan State way back on Nov. 11.

Andy Cleaves had 35 points by himself back on that November night in Turlock, but this time it was much different. The Warriors shot 36.1 percent for the game with the top score Kaelen Mitchell netting just 13 points. Vida Faniel had nine points and Kyle Gouveia added eight points to account for most of the most.

Cal State San Bernardino led by as many as 31 points late in the game after another 11-3 Coyote run. CSUSB had already established its big lead much earlier, thanks to a 17-2 spurt that started with three minutes left in the first and about three minutes into the second half.

Ajon Efferson led four CSUSB players in double figures in scoring with 15 points. CSUSB had 26 assists on 28 made baskets. The Coyotes shot 43.8 percent from the field and made 14 three-pointers.

Jordan Santa Maria grabbed seven rebounds and had four assists, both Stan State team highs.
