Warriors post another 4-3 win over Cal State East Bay; Wheatcroft saves No. 10

HAYWARD — Another one-run game. Another Chase Wheatcroft save. Another Warrior win.

For the second straight game, Stanislaus State defeated Cal State East Bay, 4-3, in come-from-behind fashion as the Warriors rallied for three runs in the ninth in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. Cal State East Bay won the nightcap 7-5 for the split.

Jack Large tied the game with a bunt as the Pioneers failed to get Brandon De La Guardia out at the plate. Then, Ethan Utler's double down the left-field line scored Vinny Margiotta as the eventual winning run as Stan State wins another one-run game. The Warriors have now been involved in seven straight one-run games and are 4-3 in these games. Further, 17 of 18 Stan State games played this season were decided by two runs or less.

As it usually is the case in these close games, Wheatcroft threw the ninth on Saturday to earn his 10th save in as many chances.

Cal State East Bay scored three times in the first two innings before starter Tyler Murphy settled down. Murphy went six innings and gave up two earned runs on 10 hits before allowing the bullpen to take over.

The Warrior bullpen was strong again. Micah Hall gave up just one hit in his one inning. Brandon Scott pitched a perfect eighth to give the Warriors offense a chance.

Trailing 3-1, the Warriors went to work. Back-to-back doubles by Michael Wyatt and De La Guardia plated the first run to set up Large and Utler's at-bats to cap the three-run rally.

Wheatcroft walked the first batter he faced, but he retired the next three Pioneers for his NCAA Division II leading 10th save. Last season, Nick Voumard led the nation with 15 saves.

De La Guardia ended up with two doubles and Large was 2-for-5 as eight different Warriors hit safely to account for the 10-hit attack.

In the second game, CSUEB scored five runs in the first to answer the Warriors' four-run first en route to the seven-inning win.
