Warriors blow out Cal State Monterey Bay in game one before split

TURLOCK — For a team that's been depending on its pitching to win games, the Warriors flexed their offensive muscles in a huge way to open the series against Cal State Monterey Bay with a 13-2 win on Saturday.

Stanislaus State sent 15 batters to the plate with the first 13 all reaching base in an 11-run sixth inning en route to the lopsided win.

Cal State Monterey Bay (15-5, 9-5 CCAA) bounced back and collected 17 hits to win the nightcap 12-1 to split the doubleheader.

In the opener, Stan State (13-9, 9-7 CCAA) scored 10 runs in an inning for the first time since Feb. 20, 2010 in a 18-4 win over Cal State L.A.

In that crooked inning, the Warriors used seven hits to score those 11 runs. The big run scoring hits came from Brandon De La Guardia, whose two-run single broke a 2-2 tie. Vinny Margiotta doubled in a run and Jack Large cleared the bases loaded with Warriors with a three-run double to blow the game wide open.

Cal State Monterey Bay pitching also walked three and hit two batters in the inning. Two of those runs also scored on wild pitches.

The Warriors ended up out-hitting the top hitting team in the CCAA, 12-5. CSUMB entered the game with a league-best .312 team average.

John Holleran went 4-for-5 with a double, De La Guardia was 2-for-5 and drove in three runs with Large was 2-for-4 with two doubles and three runs batted in. Jarrett Veiga tied the game in the fourth inning with a two-run homer to right over the manual scoreboard.

Starter Joe Ryan earned the win to improve to 4-1. He struck out nine batters in six innings while allowing one earned run on three hits. Brandon Scott pitched three shutout innings for a save.

Five different Otters each had a hit and Gabe Katich was the losing pitcher.

In the nightcap, the Otters scored three runs in an inning three times and scored 11 unanswered runs to run away. Myles Hager went 4-for-6 and TJ Dove was 3-for-5 to lead the CSUMB offense. The first five batters in the CSUMB lineup went 13-for-23 and scored 11 runs.
