TURLOCK — The Stanislaus State baseball team couldn't fully recover from allowing four unearned runs in the first inning as Cal State L.A. took the series finale, 8-5, to split the four-game set.
Through the first half of conference play, the Warriors are now 11-11 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and 15-13 overall. Cal State L.A. (16-9, 13-7 CCAA) was able to earn a series split despite giving up 36 runs in four games.
In Sunday's game, the Golden Eagles scored four times on three hits and capitalized on two Stan State errors after two outs in the first inning. The Warriors ended up with three errors in the game and 10 in the last three games.
The Warriors did get two runs back in the home half of the first on a two-run triple by
Andrew Wheat. Wheat and Margiotta each had two hits on the day. Wheat played in three games in the series and went 8-for-13 and scored five times with five RBI.
Stan State had a chance to rally back in the seventh inning trailing 8-3. After
John Holleran drew a bases loaded walk to make it 8-4 with one out, Wheat struck out and
Jarrett Veiga grounded out to first to leave the bags full.
Kevin Hahn kept the game close to give the offense a chance. Hahn threw the final three innings and allowed just two hits.
The Warriors will be on the road next weekend, at Cal State San Bernardino, with the series beginning on Thursday due to Easter Sunday.
