TURLOCK — Just two days after playing in the biggest Division II softball tournament in the West, the Stanislaus State and Western Washington softball teams battled in a pair of non-conference games — to a hard-fought split.
The Warriors won game one 5-3 in a game that featured 22 hits and 16 runners left on base. In the nightcap, Western Washington held the edge in the pitching duel to win 3-2 in extra innings.
Stanislaus State will carry its 18-14 overall record into another CCAA series, beginning this Friday, at home against Cal State San Marcos.
On Tuesday, the Warriors got all over WWU starter Shearyna Labasan in the first inning. Stan State plated three runs while looking like it was going to blow the game away. However, Labasan settled down and managed to leave baserunners on base to keep the game close.
For Stan State, the first five batters did damage, going 8-for-19. In fact the top three batters were 6-for-12.
Anyssa Garvin got the win in the circle.
In the nightcap, WWU starter Anna Kasner was dominant early, striking out 10 Warriors in five innings before finishing with 12 Ks in eight innings, out-dueling
Karina Callazo. Callazo threw seven innings and gave up one unearned run on five hits.
WWU scored the first run with the runner reached on a fielding error. However, the Warriors got even with pinch runner
Karmyn Rivera stealing two bases and tying the game on a wild pitch.
In the eighth, Rylie Wales drove in two runs with a double to give WWU a 3-1 lead. Stanislaus tried to get even again, scoring a run on a steal and over-throw. However, Kasner struckout the final two Warriors to end the game.
