LA JOLLA — UC San Diego solved the CCAA's best pitching staff as the Tritons scored 26 runs in 14 innings of play for a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.
The Tritons had season highs of 23 hits, 10 extra-base hits with eight doubles to win game one, 17-2. UCSD followed it with a 9-2, seven inning game nightcap, to take the first three games of the series. The Warriors, now 20-19 overall and 16-17 in CCAA play, will have to try and salvage a win on Sunday to avoid the series sweep.
The Stan State pitching staff had entered the week with the CCAA's best team ERA — and while Stanislaus will still maintain a league-best 3.63 ERA, the staff had seen better days. Eight Warrior pitchers allowed 36 hits and 26 runs — only two runs were unearned.
Three Tritons (23-13, 19-12 CCAA) had three hits each in game one on Saturday and UCSD scored runs in all but two innings. Blake Baumgartner was 3-for-6 with a double, a homer, scored four times and drove in two runs.
Stan State managed just two singles (by
Michael Wyatt and
Anthony Enwiya) off Preston Mott and three UCSD relievers did not give up a hit in the final three-plus innings.
In game two, UCSD scored five runs in the second inning for a 5-1 lead to again run away with the game.
Braeden Oki was 2-for-3,
Jack Large doubled in a run in the first inning and
Vinny Margiotta was 1-for-2.
The final game of the series on Sunday is scheduled for a Noon start.
