TURLOCK —
Ilena Rivera scored twice during an action pack non-conference match between host Stanislaus State and Central Washington as the Warriors posted a 3-1 win Saturday night.
Three great long passes set-up the Stan State goals as the Warriors began the season 2-0 for the third consecutive year.
Rivera (Manteca/East Union HS), perhaps the shortest player on the field at 4-foot-10, used her speed to beat the Wildcats twice. First, in the 52nd minute, she collected a long pass from the middle of the field by
Kassandra Le (San Jose/Oak Grove HS) and out-ran her defenders to beat the goalkeeper to make it 1-0.
After Central Washingtion (0-1-1) tied the score 10 minutes later, Rivera netted her second score on a similar play. This time the long service by
Jenna Zuniga (Manteca/East Union HS) came from even deeper in the zone for the 2-1 score at 66:43.
Mayah Chambers (Modesto/Enochs HS) made it 3-1 in the 72nd minute on a perfect header after Zuniga sent an one-bouncer across the field to the far post.
The Warriors had 11 shots in the second half, out-shooting the visitors 11-3. In the end they held a 15-5 advantage.
Haley Crook (Modesto/Davis HS) earned the clean sheet with two saves.
Fresno Pacific, the PacWest's favor to win the conference title in 2018, is Stan State's next opponent on Monday night at 7 p.m.
