TURLOCK — Unable to find the back of the net on a number of golden opportunities throughout the match, the Stanislaus State women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 double-overtime loss to Cal State L.A. on Sunday at Warrior Stadium.
The Warriors found themselves on the losing end of a home match for the first time in nearly two years as Stan State falls to 4-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal State L.A. will make its return home with 4-1-1, 1-0-1 marks.
"We played a fantastic match against an outstanding team. I'm extremely proud of the effort and the caliber of soccer we played," head coach
Gabriel Bolton said.
Stanislaus State controlled the offense most of the afternoon and out-shot the Golden Eagles by a two-to-one margin, 26-13. However, the Warriors miss a lot of chances.
A
Rayana Plancarte goal was called back early in the first half due to an offsides call. Then,
Mayah Chambers' penalty kick try in the 58th minute was saved by Adriana Maldonado, who had a tremendous match with nine saves for L.A. That PK would have even the score after the Golden Eagles went ahead in the 41st minute by a Paulina Chaidez score.
Even at that point, the Warriors were out-playing Cal State L.A., out-shooting the opponents 13-3 in the first half.
Stan State did tie the match in the 81st minute on a beautiful diving header by
Sadie Ortiz after Chambers sent a cross to the far post.
"(Sadie) just has incredible stamina. She made a run from the left back to score on a diving header on a cross from the right back," Bolton added.
The Warriors continued to strike, especially in overtime. In the first OT, three shots during a sequence right in front of the net some-how didn't cross the goal line. A
Ilena Rivera shot hit the cross bar, a rebound shot by
Autumn Halvorsen was saved by a position player and the follow-up attempt by
Demi Gonis sailed high.
Stanislaus had two chances to end the match in the second overtime with a
Rayana Plancarte blast hit the cross bar. The rebound went directly to Rivera, whose point-blank attempt was kicked away by Maldonado.
Chaidez also accounted for the game-winner, in the 106th minute, by Irma Pinzon.
Prior to Sunday's match the Warriors had gone 10-0-2 in their last 12 home matches. They had not loss since Oct. 21, 2016 and are 70-18-8 at Warrior Stadium since the facility opened in 2009.
Stan State will play the next four conference matches away from home before hosting UC Santa Cruz in a non-conference tilt on Oct. 6.
