TURLOCK —
Andy Cleaves scored 20-plus points again and
Rolaun Dunham sparked the offense with a mini-show of his own as the Stanislaus State men's basketball team handled Cal State San Marcos, 82-60, Thursday night.
In the team's largest margin of victory against a team not named Cal State Monterey Bay since 2014, Cleaves scored 21 points and Dunham netted a career-high 16 to lead the offense. The Warriors, winners of back-to-back conference games, improved to 6-7 overall and 3-6 in league play.
Trailing by seven at the break, and by as many as nine points early in the second half, the Warriors caught fire on both ends of the court. A 13-3 run capped by a Cleaves three-pointers turned the nine-point deficit into a 46-45 lead at 12:37 left to play.
Leading by five with about 11 minutes left to go, Dunham put-on a personal show for the next three-and-a-half minutes. After a steal, Dunham went coast-to-coast for a layup to start a personal 11-0 run. His three-point basket at 7:41 capped the spurt resulting in a 61-47 Stan State lead.
For Cleaves, it was his third straight 20-point game. Last week, he scored 21 and 26 respectively. In fact, Thursday night's 21-point total was his fourth Blackjack of the season.
Cleaves only missed one shot all night, converting on 8 of 9 field goals with four three-pointers. He also had five rebounds.
Ty Davis earned a career-high 11 assists in the game to go with nine rebounds and six points. The only other time he had 10 or more assists as on Nov. 15, 2017, when he recorded a triple double (12 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists) against Cal State San Bernardino.
Darius Scott also had 11 points with five assists and
Jacob Danhoff also chipped in 11.
Thursday night's 22-point win was the team's largest margin of victory against a CCAA team other than Cal State Monterey Bay since 2014. The Warriors beat Cal State East Bay, 92-61, back on Feb. 21, 2014.
The Warriors will host No. 18 UC San Diego Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. It will be the teams' first meeting since the epic CCAA Tournament first round game last March in La Jolla. UCSD won that game in double overtime, 82-81, by going 29 of 31 at the free throw line (10 of 11 in overtime periods).
