Warriors beat Holy Names and rain, to open 2019 season

TURLOCK — Alexis Paz made a splash in his Warrior debut before the skies opened up with rain as Stanislaus State won twice over Holy Names on opening day 2019.

After numerous schedule changes, and last-minute umpire assignments, the Warriors began the year against Holy Names instead of Central Washington early Friday — and the bats did not sleep-in.

Paz went 3-for-5 including a three-run blast in the third inning en route to the Warriors 9-2 game-one win. In the second game, an eight-run fourth led to a 15-5 win for the sweep.

While senior starter Tyler Murphy made a stellar appearance on the mound, the offense went to work. The heart of the order — Jacob Garcia, Paz and Jack Large — went 8-for-12 in the first game. Further, the first five batters in the lineup went 11-for-20, scored six runs and drove in six.

The same five batters would again pick up eight more hits, scored seven more times and drove in five runs in game two.

In all, Paz was 5-for-10 and drove in five runs in the doubleheader. Braeden Oki also had five hits and Michael Wyatt, who homered in the second game, was 3-for-6 and walked three times. He added a double for a 1.167 slugging percentage on the day.

Stan State had 29 hits in the twinbill.

Murphy got the win in the opener with six innings pitched. He gave up two unearned runs and struck out seven. Rylan Tinsley won game two in relief of starter Matt Pulos who left the game after four innings with a 12-3 lead.

Chase Wheatcroft, the preseason third-team All-American closer, threw three innings. He gave up two runs on four hits in the seventh but retired seven straight to end the game.

The doubleheader started at 10 a.m. and ended minutes before the rain came. The game was played under light drizzle for the last two innings.

The Warriors will prepare to take on No. 8 Azusa Pacific next weekend when the Cougars visit. The three-game set begins on Friday with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
