Team effort results in baseball team's 7-5 win over Central Washington

TURLOCK — Warriors up and down the line-up hit and produced runs while the bullpen shut-out the Wildcats as Stanislaus State defeated Central Washington, 7-5, Monday afternoon.

Four Stan State relievers threw three and two-thirds of shutout innings as the Warriors beat CWU for the 12th straight time.

The Warriors, winners of two straight, will take their 4-2 non-conference record into California Collegiate Athletic Association play next weekend when they face Chico State.

The Monday single game was a make-up of last weekend's washed-out series against Central Washington. CWU returned to California and got two games out of its series against Academy of Art on Sunday.

After starter Kevin Hahn came out in the sixth, Nathan Gutierrez, Tommy Stropsky, Brandon Scott and Chase Wheatcroft allowed just two hits. In fact Stropsky, Scott and Wheatcroft only allowed one baserunner (hit-by-pitch) in the final three innings.

Wheatcroft pitched a powerful final inning getting all three batters, with two strikeouts, for his third save in as many chances this season. Together, five Stan State pitchers fanned 13 batters. Hahn had seven and Scott struck-out the side in his one inning.

Offensively, the Warriors had a slow start, but when they started hitting, they hit.

Three hits in the third resulted in two runs to tie the game. Four hits – including a double and a triple – in the fifth plated three runs to put them up 6-2.

Matt Elser, Jack Large, Braeden Oki, Michael Wyatt each had two hits. Four other players in the lineup had a hit or drove in a run. Large went 2-for-4 with his first career triple and Elser went 2-for-5 with two runs batted in.

The Warriors have now won 12 consecutive games in this head-to-head series. Today was the teams' first meeting since 2012. Stan State improves to 16-6 all-time against Central Washington.
