TURLOCK — It was very apparent which team was tired and which team was fresh Saturday night.
Stanislaus State was coming off a high-energy, fast-paced game Thursday night against Humboldt State while the Chico State Wildcats were probably relaxing on their couches.
Without making excuses, the schedule inequalities once again likely was one of the factors as the Warriors lost 58-47 Saturday night. Stan State is now 3-7 on Saturdays. Each Saturday during the CCAA season playing against a team with just one game that week.
Still, despite playing twice in less than 48 hours, the Warriors played hard and challenged the Wildcats. The Stan State defense kept Chico State to 36 percent shooting and under 50 points until the free throws down the stretch.
"I am very proud of how hard we competed tonight," head coach
Paul Trevor said. "We just had some difficult times finishing at the basket, but we defended with toughness and kept it close."
The Warriors started the game shooting 1 of 17 and trailed 19-4. However, somehow they got the energy to make a 14-3 run to get within four points capped by a
Jourdan Johnson three-pointer. Nate Ambrosini's trey did put Chico State up by seven at the half, 25-18.
Chico State again went up 40-25 at 12:28 in the second half. But the never-give-up Warriors battled back and got within six points a couple of times. However, each time Stan State gets within six, Chico State answered with a three-pointer.
Darius Scott and
Jacob Danhoff each scored 11 points, but
Andy Cleaves was held to six points to go with his eight rebounds. Cleaves had entered the night as the top scorer during CCAA play at 14.6 per game and was coming off a season-high 29 point game against Humboldt State.
The 10th place Warriors dropped to 10-12 overall and 7-11 in league play while Chico State moved up to ninth place at 7-9 CCAA (8-9 overall).
