Wheatcroft throws complete game shutout in opener before teams split

TURLOCK — Chase Wheatcroft continues to put up zeroes as the Warrior senior threw a complete-game shutout in the series opener against Cal State East Bay. Stanislaus State took the game one pitchers' duel, 1-0, before falling in the short nightcap, 8-4.

Wheatcroft went the distance in the three-hit shutout while striking out eighth to finally post a personal win after two no decisions in the first two starts. The preseason third-team All-American extended his scoreless streak to 27 1/3 innings. The last time he yield a run was on Feb. 8 against then No. 8 Azusa Pacific.

Since then, he's been nearly un-hittable. In his third start on Friday, he got into some jams early but managed to get out of them with strikeouts.

Wheatcroft also had not had much run-support in this three starts — games the Warriors won 2-0, 2-1 and now 1-0 (the team scored two of those runs while he's on the mound). On Friday, it took a walk-off hit to finally get the victory.

Braeden Oki drew a two-out walk and stole second ahead of a Garcia single through the left side for the thrilling win.

Cal State East Bay's Jacob Nelson also had a nice start, going six innings and allowed just three hits and struck out seven. Ransome Alexander pitched the final two-plus innings and was tagged with the loss.

The Pioneers (9-7, 6-4 CCAA) scored seven runs in the first inning of game two to, surprisingly, sent Rylan Tinsley off the field with just one out. Tinsley had not given up an earned run in 19 2/3 innings prior to Friday's start.

Stanislaus State (8-6, 4-4 CCAA) did chip away at the lead and had the game tying run at the plate in the in the sixth. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Mark Woinarowicz got two shallow flyouts and a strikeout to end the Stan State threat.

The Warriors left 10 runners on base in each game on Friday.

Jack Large went 2-for-4 in each game and Oki was 3-for-4 in game two. Vinney Margiotta tripled in two runs in the fifth inning. Grant Bunker also had two hits in the nightcap.
