TURLOCK — Friday series openers are supposed to be match-up of the aces. Not so much.
Stanislaus State and Cal State San Marcos scored a total of 22 runs to open the four-game series on Friday with the home team Cougars taking the game, 14-8.
This is the fourth straight Friday that the Warriors were involved in a game with 11 or more runs combined. Last Friday, the Warriors beat CSU San Bernardino 13-6.
Cal State San Marcos (14-17, 10-15 CCAA) scored six runs in the sixth inning to surpass the Warriors en route to the six-run win. Together the teams combined for 32 hits.
Alexis Paz and
Braeden Oki each went 3-for-5 while
Jack Large and
Grant Bunker each had two hits to lead Stanislaus State (17-12, 13-10 CCAA). Bunker homered in the sixth and Large doubled twice.
Chase Wheatcroft had another tough start in the no decision. He gave up six runs on 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings with one strikeout.
Nathan Gutierrez was tagged with the loss when he gave up six runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings.
The first six batters in the CSUSM lineup went 14-for-29. Austin Ott was 3-for-5 with two doubles, a homer and drove in four runs.
In the San Marcos sixth, Ott hit a two-run homer, Nashea Diggs cleared the bases with a three-run triple to right-center to highlight the six-run inning.
