SAN MARCOS –
Brandon Scott threw 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, and
Alexis Paz was four-for-five with three runs batted in as Stanislaus State used a three-run tenth inning to defeat Cal State San Marcos, 7-4, on Sunday.
The Warriors, 20-12 overall and 16-10 in the CCAA, completed a 3-1 series victory over the Cougars (14-20, 10-18 CCAA) with its extra-inning win on Sunday, twice rallying with a three-run inning.
Cal State San Marcos scored first, putting a pair of runs on the board in the second against Warrior starter
Kevin Hahn. Stan State cut its deficit in half in the top of the fifth on a bases-loaded walk to
Brandon De La Guardia, but despite getting four of its first five hitters on base in the inning, the Warriors managed just one run.
De La Guardia delivered the tying run in the top of the seventh inning, plating
Braeden Oki with an one-out single and opening up a three-run inning for the Warriors. Paz drove in two runs with a single two batters later to give Stan State a short-lived 4-2 lead.
CSUSM tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of runs, the last of which came home on a two-out single by Cabot Van Til.
Stan State managed single base runners in the eighth and ninth innings, and San Marcos had the winning run at third base with one out in the bottom of the ninth before Scott induced a lineout and a fly out to the Cougars' top two hitters in the lineup, taking the game to extra innings.
In the tenth,
Jayce Gardner led off with a single, and after a fielder's choice, a walk, and two wild pitches, the Warriors had runners at the corners with one out. An intentional walk to Oki loaded the bases, and all three runners advanced with yet another Cougar wild pitch to give Stan State the lead. De La Guardia walked to load the bases again,
Vinny Margiotta hit a sacrifice fly, and Paz provided another insurance tally with the fourth of his hits in the game – all singles – to drive in Oki.
Scott allowed a pair of singles in the bottom of the tenth, but the fourth of his strikeouts in the game – and the second of the inning – capped the victory for the Warriors.
Stan State rapped out 12 hits, with Paz (four), De La Guardia, Margiotta, and Gardner (two apiece) all collecting multi-hit games. Six different Warriors scored runs, and Scott (3-1) scattered five hits while striking out four in his relief stint.
Griffin Teisher led Cal State San Marcos with three hits, and four Cougars added two hits each in a losing effort.
Stan State returns home next weekend to host UC San Diego in a four-game series at Warrior Field beginning on Friday (Apr. 5) at 6 p.m.
