Bullpen shuts down Toros as Stanislaus State wins series

TURLOCK — The Stanislaus State baseball team made an impressive comeback as the Warriors rallied to beat Cal State Dominguez Hills, 5-2, to win the series on Saturday.

The bullpen was once again brilliant and Brandon De La Guardia jump-start the offense with his first-ever home run as the Warriors took three games out of four in the series. Stanislaus State improved to 26-18 overall and 22-16 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Brandon Scott came in in the fourth inning and threw four shutout innings. He gave up just a hit and struck out six before turning it over to closer Matt Pulos.

Pulos sat down all six batters with five strikeouts for the two-inning save. In fact, the Scott-Pulo duo sat 16 consecutive batters to end the game.

In the series, Scott and Pulos combined to pitch 10 innings, allowed three hits, recorded three saves and struck out 17 Toros.

Pulos, now with eight saves, extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 30 2/3 innings. During this stretch, he's only allowed three hits with 51 strikeouts.

Trailing 2-0 after the first inning with two unearned runs, the Warriors looked like they had no answers against CSUDH pitcher Conner Dreyer. Dreyer struck out the first four batters and faced just one over the minimum through three.

Then, De La Guardia led off the fourth with a deep drive to left into the Stan State bullpen. It was his first home run — ever, in his baseball career.

That bomb woke up the offense as the Warriors scored two more times in the inning. A walk after Grant Bunker ahead of a RBI double to center by Grant Victor tied the game at 2-2. Then, Nathan Gutierrez singled to right to score Victor for the lead.

With the Toros (15-27, 14-26 CCAA) getting shut-down by Scott, Stanislaus would tag on two more runs in the sixth with RBI singles by Jayce Gardner and Gutierrez.

Gutierrez finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and Victor also had two hits.
