IRVINE – The Warriors took on the PacWest defending champions Concordia Irvine for their first game on Saturday and fought hard but lost 4-2. Against Western Washington, the Vikings held the lead for most of the game until the Warriors scored late runs in the top of the sixth to win, 4-2.
The Warriors are now 1-3 this year. The Concordia Irvine Eagles are 3-1 and the Western Washington Vikings are 0-4.
LEADING ATHLETES OF THE DAY
- Against the Eagles, Melissa Spencer and Riquel Riveira scored late runs to tie the score 2-2. This was until the Eagles took the game.
- Aliyah Garvin had a great day going 4-for-8 overall with two RBIs.
- With one run, Spencer also went 2-for-5.
- Newcomer, Riquel Riveira had an incredible day she was 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs.
- Riveira went a perfect 2-for-2 against the Vikings with one RBI and a double.
- Payton West went 1-for-4 against the Vikings, hitting a triple into right field in the fourth inning. West also scored one run.
- Unfortunately, Megan Stacy had her second loss of the season after pitching seven innings and striking out three against the Eagles.
- Kyndra Marzorini earned her first win of the year pitching three innings and striking out three.
TEAM PERFORMANCE
- The team scored a total of six runs, one triple and one double over the day. They went 13-for-51 and had three RBIs.
- Despite the loss, collectively the Warriors struck out seven and only walked five.
- It looked as if the game would head into extra innings when the teams were tied 2-2 by the sixth but the Warriors weren't going to let that stop them.
- With the help from Desiree Gonzalez and her sacrifice bunt, she was able to push Morgan Leonard forward and Riveira allowed her to run in the third run.
- Riveira scored the fourth run for the Warriors after Spencer got on base by error and these runs led the Warriors to victory.
NOTEWORTHY
- The Warriors are 2-5 against the Eagles since they first played in February 2001.
- The last time the two teams met the Warriors beat the No. 5 Eagles, 4-0, on March 30, 2019 during the annual Tournament of Champions.
- The Warriors are 20-9 against the Vikings since they first met in February 1999.
- The last time the two teams met the Warriors lost in eight innings, 2-3, in February 2018.
- Concordia Irvine was predicted by far to finish first in the PacWest once again this year.
- The only GNAC team at the tournament, Western Washington is predicted to finish second in their conference.
