LA JOLLA—The Warriors may have lost in the second round of the CCAA Tournament but the way they played was not a loss all together. The Warriors kept up with the Tritons of UC San Diego and eventually the Tritons took a 25-point run and this is what put them over the Warriors in the fourth quarter. The Warriors fall 53-73 to UC San Diego to close out their incredible season and post-season.
Going into the fourth, the Warriors led over UC San Diego, 46-45. The Tritons then went on a 19-point run in the fourth quarter only allowing the Warriors to score once until they continued into a 25-point run to take the game by 20 points.
All within seconds, the Warriors were down with only minutes to spare.
The Warriors finish their season 15-14 overall and 12-10 in the conference. The Tritons will continue into the championship game at 24-5 overall and 18-4 in the CCAA.
LEADING THE WAY IN LA JOLLA
- Angelica Baylon led with ten points at the half.
- Angelica Baylon was just one point away from her season best 16 points against Cal State East Bay.
- Baylon led the Warriors with 15 points and four assists. She also had two steals.
- Kaleigh Taylor led with seven rebounds and shot 50 percent from the field.
- With three blocks, Brittney Livingston led her team in her last game as a Warriors.
TOURNAMENT TEAM WORK
- The Warriors went on a 14-point run in the third to take the lead 40-39.
- From this point on it was a battle for points.
- The teams tied 43-43 with 1:18 left in the third.
- The women led by three going into the fourth up until the Tritons took off.
- The Warriors scored 24 points in the paint and six off turnovers.
- They made 34 rebounds which was not much less than the Tritons 42.
- The Warriors led in the first and third quarters with their largest lead being by four in the first quarter.
- The Warriors went 3-8 from the free throw line shooting 37. 5 percent.
- Fourth quarter three-pointers from the Tritons are what led to the Warriors defeat. The Tritons shot almost 86 percent from the three-point arc in the fourth while the Warriors shot a mere 29 percent.
- Six three-pointers from the Tritons in the fourth would lead UCSD to victory.
NOTEWORTHY
- The Warriors are 7-34 against the Tritons since they first met in January 2001.
- The last time the two teams met the Warriors lost 54-82. This was the second game of the season.
- Earlier on January 9, 2020 the Warriors lost to the Tritons 56-76.
- This was Stanislaus State's fourth CCAA Tournament appearance since 2017.
- Stan State last appeared in the postseason in 2017 with a first-round win over Cal State L.A.
- In 2017, the Warriors beat Cal State L.A. to advance and then lost to the top seed UC San Diego, 82-67 in San Marcos.
- Stan State also appeared in the CCAA Tournament in 2016, 2011 and 2009.
- Cal State East Bay is set to play Cal State San Marcos Friday night to decide who will play the Tritons in the championship game on Saturday at 8 p.m.
