TURLOCK — Yisel Perez called game Saturday night.
Â
With the Stanislaus State volleyball team facing a possible fifth set and already trailing multiple times, Perez grabbed the reins and took over, scoring the Warriors' final four points in the fourth set to carry them to a comeback win and clinch a 3-1 (25-19, 25-17, 18-25, 29-27) California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Cal State East Bay.
Â
The Warriors (11-11, 7-7 CCAA) trailed 27-26 – the third set point they faced across a four-point span – and Perez had had enough. Her first kill in her four-point, game-ending sequence tied it at 26-26. After a service error gave Cal State East Bay (8-14, 3-11 CCAA) another lead at 27-26, she really took the game into her own hands.
Â
Perez tallied her 14th kill of the match to tie it at 27-all. She then followed that with her turn on the serve and threw up back-to-back service aces to end the game. She served one to the back-right corner that stifled CSUEB's libero, and the game-winner was a sailing laser of a serve that went off outside hitter Breyan Ashley's arms to clinch it.
Â
The Warriors trailed 23-20 in the fourth and a deciding fifth set against the newly energized Pioneers looked eminent. But Stan State answered, getting four consecutive kills from
Kiara Erving (2),
Haley Burdo (to tie it at 23-23), and
Mariah Iosua to give them a 24-23 lead and flip the script. And yet, they still struggled to put Cal State East Bay away. The Pioneers went on to force three different set points with leads of 25-24, 26-25, and 27-26.
Â
Stanislaus State won the first two sets with relative ease to take a 2-0 match lead. Standout performances abounded in one of the team's best all-around matches of the season. Its .266 hitting percentage and 68 digs were both fifth-best this year. Their 58 team kills were third-best, and their 10 service aces were tied for fourth-most.
Â
Macky Morris had a season-high 16 kills and 14 digs for a double-double. Setter
Haley Burdo tallied 33 assists and nearly had her own double-double with eight digs. Perez added six digs, three aces and two blocks to her 14 kills, second-most in a match in 2021.
