SAN BERNARDINO — Another all-around performance from
Kyanna Davis, dominance on the glass and a tough defensive effort Saturday carried the Stanislaus State women's basketball team to its seventh win in a row, an easy 61-48 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over host Cal State San Bernardino at Coussoulis Arena.
Â
The Warriors (7-1, 3-0 CCAA) are off to their best start in their 24-year history as members of the CCAA (since 1998-99). Their previous best start was a 6-1 push out the gate by the 2008-09 team. The seven consecutive wins match their longest streak since the 2015-16 season when they also won seven in a row during the month of January, 2016. It's Stan State's second season in a row starting 3-0 in conference play (2019-20) and third time in the last five seasons (also did it in 2016-17). It was also the fourth time in a row the Warriors beat Cal State San Bernardino (3-5, 1-2 CCAA), dating to the 2018-19 season.
Â
Stanislaus State matched a season high with 52 rebounds while also holding the Coyotes to only 36 boards. The Warriors limited Cal State San Bernardino to 28.1% shooting, including just 9.1% (1 for 11) in the second quarter. CSUSB went 5 for 24 (20.8%) from 3-point range, and struggled at the free-throw line, making 11 of 23 attempts (47.8%).
Â
Davis put up numbers in all five statistical categories (points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks) for the fourth time this season and third in the last four games, continuing to show her prowess as an all-around talent. The reigning CCAA Player of the Week posted her fifth 20-point performance of the year with 21, thanks in large part to sinking a career-high five 3-pointers. She went 5 for 7 from beyond the arc and a perfect 4 for 4 from the free-throw line. Davis barely missed a double-double again, pulling down nine rebounds for the fourth time this season. She added two assists, two steals and a block on the night.
Â
Taylor Pilot, back on the floor for the second game in a row after missing 2 1/2 weeks of action, showed signs of getting her feel back with 13 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals off the bench. She had gone 0 for 7 with three rebounds and three steals in her first game back on Thursday.
Joia Armstrong logged her first career double-digit rebounds game with 12 boards. That was backed up by five points and five blocks – the most rejections by a Warrior in a game since Erika Larsen had five against Cal State San Marcos nearly four years ago on Dec. 29, 2017.
Â
The Coyotes were led by 11 points from Nina Wallace and 10 from Samantha Henley.
Â
Stanislaus State led 37-19 at halftime and 55-29 after three quarters, never feeling any pressure after the first quarter. The Warriors started the game on an 11-1 run to feel comfortable right from the start. Cal State San Bernardino scored seven consecutive points over a 60-second span late in the first to make it a one-possession game again at 13-10, but that was the last time it'd be that close.
Â
Stan State answered with its own 7-0 run. After pushing their lead to double digits in the second quarter, the Warriors used a long, 23-7 stretch that carried late into the third which gave them their largest lead of the game at 28 points (53-25).
Â
Stanislaus State next returns home for a non-conference contest on Thursday against Seattle Pacific, then gets back to CCAA play on Saturday against Humboldt State at Fitzpatrick Arena. Fans can purchase tickets and find all live coverage links on WarriorAthletics.com.
