Falcons Get Past Warriors

TURLOCK — It was a clash of annual West Region powers Saturday at Warrior Stadium, with the No. 4 ranked team in the West – Seattle Pacific - visiting the Stanislaus State women's soccer team for a key non-conference regional battle.

It was the Falcons who came away with the victory, scoring two first-half goals to earn the 2-0 win over the Warriors.

"We played with a lot of passion and energy tonight against an outstanding team," said Stanislaus State head coach Gabriel Bolton. "I was really proud of our commitment on the field and our fearless mentality, especially in the second half."

Sophie Beadle put the Falcons (3-0) on the board in the eighth minute of the game, taking advantage of a loose ball that was sent into the box off a corner kick to put SPU ahead 1-0.

Stanislaus State (2-3) goalkeeper Amanda Leal made three saves after Seattle Pacific's first goal and had eight in the first half alone, finishing the night with a season-high 11. But the Falcons were able to punch through one more goal for good measure in the 38th minute. AJ DePinto tallied SPU's second score off a pass from Mia Mahaffey, making it 2-0.

"Amanda had an excellent game in the net and came up with some very good saves," said Bolton. "Abby (Martinez) was really fierce in her defending at the six and center back positions tonight. She really rose to the occasion. We were really dynamic in the attack tonight, we just couldn't find the back of the net. Lena (Rivera) and Julia (Cummings) really created some very good chances. Against a team of that level, you need to finish them."

The Warriors will host Cal State East Bay at 7 p.m. on Saturday for their final non-conference game before opening California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
