SANTA CRUZ — It's early, but these results certainly won't get old for the Stanislaus State men's soccer team.
The Warriors won their third consecutive game Thursday – their second straight on the road – with their third shutout of the season, topping UC Santa Cruz, 2-0, at the UC Santa Cruz Soccer Complex.
The lessons learned by the Warriors from back-to-back tough losses just two weeks ago continue to take form. After taking a 4-2 lead on Sept. 4 in their home opener against Holy Names, only to fall, 5-4, then getting beat 6-0 on the road at Dominican five days later, Stan State (3-2-1) has won three straight while only allowing one goal in over 270 minutes of soccer.
Julian Madrigal put the Warriors in the driver's seat early. Madrigal scored his second goal of the season in the seventh minute, finishing a pass from
Adrian Yepez to put the ball in the back of the net and make it 1-0. It was Yepez's second assist of the year.
Dayne Sturtevant notched his team-leading third goal of the year in the 24th minute to give the Warriors a multi-goal advantage.
Josh Santillan stole the ball at the edge of the goalkeeper box, then passed it to Sturtevant, who scored from eight yards out.
Stanislaus State plays its final non-conference game on Sept. 25, hosting California Collegiate Athletic Association foe Cal State East Bay at Warrior Stadium. Fans can find all live coverage links at WarriorAthletics.com.
