Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Warriors' Defense Stifles Lumberjacks on the Road

ARCATA, Calif. — The Stanislaus State men's basketball team held host Cal Poly Humboldt to just nine points in the first half Saturday, as the Warriors earned a season split with the Lumberjacks for the eighth consecutive season, avenging an earlier defeat with a 64-40 California Collegiate Athletic Association win at Lumberjack Arena.

The Stanislaus State (6-9, 3-7 CCAA) defense held Cal Poly Humboldt (10-8, 4-8 CCAA) to only three made baskets in the game's first 20 minutes. The Lumberjacks shot 13.0% (3 for 23) in the first half, which included a 1-for-10 performance from 3-point distance. They also only made two of six free-throw attempts (33.3%). Humboldt would finish the game shooting 27.5% (14 for 51), the lowest mark by a Stan State opponent this season and the lowest in nearly 10 years, after the Warriors held Pacifica College to a 24.3% shooting clip on Dec. 17, 2012.

On the offensive side, Tony Singleton again led the Warriors in scoring, this time with 18 points. He made four 3-pointers and added four steals, three rebounds and three assists. Luis Salgado added 10 points. Will Pallesi chipped in nine points off the bench to lead a pack of six reserves that saw playing time Saturday night, a stark contrast to recent games as the Warriors recovered from a long COVID-19 protocol pause.

Stanislaus State never trailed Saturday. It ran out to a 12-0 lead to start, while Cal Poly Humboldt missed its first six shots. The Lumberjacks finally got on the scoreboard with back-to-back buckets seven minutes into the game, but then they went on to miss 14 of their next 15 shots, while the Warriors pushed their lead to as much as 25 before heading into the locker rom with a 33-9 halftime lead.

Stan State led by as many as 33 in the second stanza, though Humboldt's shooting picked up to nearly 40%. The Lumberjacks matched the Warriors point for point in the second, tying their 31 second-half points with 31 of their own. Stan State also took advantage of 19 Humboldt turnovers, scoring 25 points off those giveaways.

Saturday's win avenged the Warriors' 66-53 setback at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena. It marked the eighth consecutive season (since 2013-14) that the two teams split their season series. It was the second time in a row and fourth time overall during that stretch that both teams won on the road.

Stanislaus State next returns home to host Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. Fans can find all live coverage links on WarriorAthletics.com.
