TURLOCK, Calif.---- The Point Loma Sea Lions held off the Stan State Warriors this evening in both teams' regular season opener in the Stanislaus State Crossover Classic in Turlock, Calif. Kaden Anderson's 26 points led the Sea Lions to the 73=62 victory.
Kobe Ordonio paced the Warriors with 21 points while
Will Pallesi added 10 points off the bench for Stan State.
FIRST HALF: Point Loma jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first five minutes of the game.
Will Pallesi's made three off an assist from
Noel Alexander Jr. cut the Sea Lion lead to five, 20-15, with nine minutes left in the half. A two by Luke Haupt increased the visitors' lead to double digits (25-15) with just four minutes left in the first half. Kaden Anderson's three gave Point Loma a 33-17 lead late in the half, but the Warriors scored the final six points capped by a Pallesi lay-up off a steal to cut the deficit to 33-23 heading into the locker room.
SECOND HALF: Stan State came out on fire to begin the second half. A
Tony Singleton lay-up off a
Benno Zecic assist capped a 9-2 run by the Warriors to cut the deficit to 35-32.
Kobe Ordonio's lay-up decreased the Sea Lion lead to 40-39 six minutes into the new stanza. Point Loma followed that with an 8-2 run to take a 48=41 lead capped by a Brian Goracke lay-up with twelve minutes to go in regulation. Stan State didn't go away as once again the Warriors cut the deficit to one (54-53), this time on two made free throws by
Marlon Short with just five minutes on the clock. The visitors came right back though and outscored their hosts, 16-4, to take a 70-57 lead with thirty-two-seconds left in the game. Ordonio's lay-up as the time expired made the final, Point Loma 73, Stan State 62.
WHAT A DEBUT: Kobe Ordonio scored a team high 21 points in his season debut as a Warrior. He went nine-for-14 including two-for-three from beyond the arc while going one-for-two from the line. He grabbed five rebounds, had three steals and one assist in 34 minutes of action.
PASSING THE BALL: Benno Zecic started the season tonight where he left off 2021-22. Zecic had seven assists with just two turnovers while recording three steals. He scored five points and had six rebounds for Stan State in 32 minutes.
OFF THE BENCH: Will Pallesi scored 10 points in 21 minutes off the bench for the Warriors. He went four-for-seven while connecting on two of his five three-point field goals. Pallesi had two steals and had a rebound too for the Warriors.
UP NEXT: Stan State will finish off the Stanislaus State Crossover Classic tomorrow evening at 7:30pm when the Warriors host Fresno Pacific. The Sunbirds lost 71-60 in tonight's first game of the classic to Cal State East Bay. Point Loma fill face Cal State East Bay at 5pm tomorrow evening in the third game of the classic.
