Stifling Defense Earns the Warriors Home Opener Victory vs Holy Names

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Warriors made their presence felt on the defensive end tonight in their home opener and first matchup of the Warrior Classic, finishing the game with 18 steals and 6 blocks over the Hawks.

Da'Myiah Lewis led the team in scoring with 13 points, seven rebounds, and two steals to go with her perfect 8/8 shooting from the free throw line. On the defensive end, Lyric Richardson was responsible for over half of the Warriors' blocks, swatting away four Holy Names shot attempts.

FIRST QUARTER: Holy Names was pressured from the jump, as Stanislaus State's defensive effort led to three forced turnovers in the opening quarter. Freshman Jadyn Patterson managed to knock down two threes in the quarter, while the team went 6/6 from the charity stripe to lead 23-12.

SECOND QUARTER: Lewis had several whistles go her way as she got going from the line once with four straight makes in the quarter. The Warriors went nearly five minutes without a bucket, until Lavinia Moa and Joia Armstrong got going down low.

THIRD QUARTER: Commanding a comfortable 21-point lead going into the second half, Stan State managed to get outscored by the Hawks in the third quarter, while having trouble keeping the ball secure. Richardson, Armstrong, and Patterson each forced some big turnovers that translated to points in transition and the Warriors would lead coming into the final ten minutes of play 52-35.

FOURTH QUARTER: Iman Addison got busy late in the fourth, pouring in all six of her points for the game in the closing quarter of play. Alexis Woodson led the team on the boards with eight rebounds to go with her seven buckets on the night. The blowout victory was capped off by a 64-47 final score, with the Warriors taking their first home victory of the new season.

POINTS OFF TURNOVERS: Defensive ball pressure and full-court presses for a majority of the game helped Stanislaus State convert 30 points off of forced turnovers on the Hawks. The team roamed their way through every passing lane and was able to put 12 fast break points on the board as a result of their efforts.

FREE THROW SHOOTING: The Warriors finished the game 20-26 from the line, their best performance at the stripe so far this season. The team had three players go perfect from the line in Liliana Marques, Makayla Jackson, and Lewis, who all combined for 13 points off foul shots.
