Warriors to Host a Pair of CCAA Games This Weekend

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State will host a pair of CCAA games this weekend at The Fitz. The Warriors will entertain Cal State San Marcos this Thursday, December 1 with tip-off scheduled for 7:30pm. Two days later, Stan State will host Cal State Los Angeles on Saturday, December 3 with a 3pm scheduled tip-off time.

WARRIORS IN REVIEW: Stan State enters this weekend with a 2-5 overall record and a 0-1 CCAA record. The Warriors are averaging 66.6 points per game while giving up 71.1 points per game. They are being out--rebounded 37.7 to 32.7.  Three players are averaging double digits in scoring in Kobe Ordonio (15.7 ppg), Marlon Short (13.6 ppg) and Tony Singleton (12.8 ppg). Benno Zecic leads the team with his 43 assists. Short leads the team with his 6.3 rebounding average, five blocked shots and 15 steals. Noel Alexander Jr. is shooting a team best 75% from the charity stripe and Ordonio has connected on a team high 83.3% of his attempts from the line. Singleton has made a team high 16 three-point field goals and made a team leading 45.7% of his attempts from beyond the arc.

LAST GAMES:  The Warriors went 1-1 last week in their two games against Academy of Art and Chico State. They started the week with a 75-69 win over Academy of Art to snap the Urban Knights' four-game winning streak. Marlon Short paced the Warriors with 21 points, 10 rebounds and five steals.  Kobe Ordonio added 17 points while Noel Alexander Jr. chipped in 10 points.  Benno Zecic had eleven assists for Stan State. The Warriors finished their week with a 64-55 loss at Chico State in both teams' CCAA opener on Saturday. Short had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Warriors with Zecic adding 12 points.   Ordonio scored 10 points and Alexander scored 10 points. 

DOUBLE-DOUBLE:  Marlon Short has recorded five double-doubles in his career at Stan State after recording back-to-back doubles this past week. Short scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Warriors' 75-69 win over Academy of Art on Tuesday. He came back with a 16-point, 10-rebound performance in the Warriors' 64-55 loss at Chico State on Saturday. For the season, he is averaging 13.6 points and 6.3 rebounds per game while shooting 45.5% from the field and 72.2% from the line. Short has blocked a team leading five shots this season.

+2.0 ASSIST/TURNOVER RATIO: Benno Zecic has posted a +2.0 assist to turnover ratio this season with 43 assists and 21 turnovers in the Warriors' first seven games of the season. He dished out a career high 11 assists in Stan State's win over Academy of Art on Tuesday.  Zecic also has recorded 12 steals this season, which is second on the team, just three behind Marlon Short's 15.

AMONGST THE NATION'S LEADERS: Benno Zecic and Marlon Short are among the NCAA Division II leaders in four individual statistical categories. Zecic is fifth in total assists and 12th in assists per game. Short is 12th in total steals and 24th in double-doubles.

CCAA LEADERS:  As a team, the Warriors are in the top half of the CCAA in six team statistical categories. They are third in three-point field goal percentage defense, fourth in scoring defense and turnover margin, fifth in assist/turnover ratio and sixth in scoring and three-point field goals made. The trio of Kobe Ordonio, Marlon Short and Benno Zecic are in the top ten in five individual categories. Zecic leads the CCAA in assists and is fourth in assist/turnover ratio. Ordonio is third in free throw percentage and eighth in scoring while Short is fourth in steals.

CAL STATE SAN MARCOS IN REVIEW: The Cougars are 1-4 and 1-0 in the CCAA heading into Thursday's game with Stan State. They snapped their season beginning four-game losing streak this Saturday with a 78-64 victory at Cal State Los Angeles. CSUSM is averaging 65.4 points per game while giving up 70.4 points per game. The Cougars are being outrebounded 33.0 to 27.4.  Greg Milton III leads the way with his 22.2 scoring average and nine three-point field goals made. Joel Mensah leads the team with his 7.0 rebounding average and 56.8% shooting from the field. Zack Perlstein is shooting a team leading 87.5% from the charity stripe. Jayce McCain has dished out 23 assists and recorded 10 steals to lead the way for CSUSM.

ALL-TIME SERIES: Cal State San Marcos leads the all-time series with the Warriors, 7-3. The Cougars defeated Stan State last season 66-52 in San Marcos despite Marlon Short's 22-point, 10-rebound performance. The last Warrior win over CSUSM was on November 11, 2020, a 66-53 win in Turlock.

CAL STATE LOS ANGELES IN REVIEW:  The Golden Eagles are 3-4 overall and 0-1 in the CCAA entering their Thursday game at Sonoma State. Cal State Los Angeles Is averaging 66.6 points per game while giving up 72.0 points per game. CSULA is being outrebounded 39.3 to 29.4.  Three players are averaging double digits in scoring in Dominic Escobar (13.8 ppg), Shane Bell 913.1 ppg) and Payton Moore (12.0 ppg). Bell is averaging a team leading 5.0 rebounds per game and shooting a team high 60% from three-point land with a team high 12 three-point field goals made. Bell also leads the team with his 25 assists and 59% shooting from the field. Jared Pearre has blocked a team high seven shots and shooting a team leading 80.6% from the line.

ALL-TIME SERIES:  Cal State Los Angeles leads the all-time series 17-10 but Stan State has won the last two meetings. The Warriors won last year 62-60 in Los Angeles with Tony Singleton scoring 14 points and Benno Zecic adding 11 points.

UP NEXT:  After Saturday's game, Stan State will return to the road for a pair of games in Northern California.  The Warriors will be in Rohnert Park, Calif., on Thursday, December 8 for a conference contest with Sonoma State. They will end their two-game NorCal trip on Saturday, December 10 with a game with Cal Poly Humboldt in Arcata. Both contests are scheduled to begin at 7:30pm.
