ROHNERT PARK, Calif.---- Stan State lost 1-0 to the Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles this afternoon in the CCAA Championship Semi-finals at Seawolf Soccer Field on the campus of Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, Calif. The Warriors will now wait until the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship Selection Show this Monday, November 7 at 4pm (PT) to see if they receive a berth to the NCAA Division II National Women's Soccer Championships.
FIRST HALF: It looked like Jocelyn Lopez was going to give Stan State (10-4-4) the early lead in the 11th minute but her shot went over the top of the net. Alexia Estrada made one of her eight saves on the day stopping the Golden Eagles' Melody Landphear's shot on goal attempt in the 12th minute. Makeila Yancey saw her chance to give the Warriors the lead sail over the top of the crossbar to keep the match scoreless in the 19th minute. Stan State had another chance in the 28th minute when Sabrina Cabrera's shot attempt went over the top of the goal. Two minutes later, Marivic Lek-Miro had a chance to give the Warriors the lead but once again the shot went over the top of the goal. The Warriors had one more chance late in the half, but Yancey's shot once again went wide of the goal to send the match into halftime scoreless.
SECOND HALF: Cal State Los Angeles (10-3-6) recorded the first two shot on goal attempts in the first five minutes of the half including in the 50th minute when Estrada stopped Thaiz Hernandez's shot on goal attempt. Jocelyn Lopez looked like she was going to give Stan State the 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute but Areli Reyes made her only save of the match. Five minutes later, the Golden Eagles took the 1-0 on a goal by Kaelah Basurto off a ball from Melody Landphear. Cal State Los Angeles held Stan State without a shot attempt in the final 23 minutes as the Golden Eagles took the 1-0 victory. The Golden Eagles will face Sonoma State this Sunday, November 6 at 1pm in the championship match.
NOW PLAY THE WAITING GAME: Stan State will now play the waiting game to see if they will receive one of the 56 berths to the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship. The selection show is set for 4pm (PT) on www.ncaa.com. The winner of the CCAA Championship Tournament on Sunday will receive the league's automatic berth. Stan State was seventh in this week's NCAA Division II West Regional rankings. The top six teams in the West Region will receive berths to the NCAA Division II Championships.
ALL-CCAA WARRIORS: Alexis Brewah was named the CCAA Newcomer of the Year while teammate Sabrina Cabrera was named the conference's Midfielder of the Year. Brewah and Cabrera were named to the First Team while Alexia Estrada, Jackzeny Mancilla, Summer England and Jocelyn Lopez earned Honorable Mention honors as voted on by the league's twelve head coaches.
