LOS ANGELES — Liliana Marques went over the 20-point mark for the second time in three games and the Stanislaus State women's basketball team overcame a slow start to take the lead, but Cal State LA had the final word, pulling away late for a 78-69 California Collegiate Athletic Association win at University Gym.
Â
Marques scored 21 points Saturday after scoring 23 a week ago in the Warriors' win over Cal State Monterey Bay. She made four 3-pointers, three in the fourth quarter alone, and also had three rebounds and an assist. Marques has been on a tear of late, scoring double-digit points in five straight games and eight of her last nine.
Â
Joia Armstrong scored 16 points as the Warriors' only other double-figure scorer. She was two rebounds shy of a double-double with eight while adding two assists and two blocks.
Ashmeen Sran scored eight points and had a team-high seven assists off the bench.
Â
Cal State LA (11-11, 10-6 CCAA) had a big first quarter, outscoring Stanislaus State (12-9, 7-8 CCAA) 24-15. The Warriors answered with two 20-point quarters of their own in the second and third, first tying the game heading into halftime at 36-36, then taking a three-point lead into the fourth quarter with a 20-17 showing in the third.
Â
Stanislaus State still led the game with six minutes to play after Marques' second 3-pointer of the night made it 63-62, but that was the last time it would lead. The Golden Eagles answered with six consecutive points to take the lead for good. Marques hit another trey with 2:40 on the clock, pulling the Warriors within two at 68-66, and that was as close as they would get. CSULA closed the game on a 10-3 run while Stan State finished 1 for 4 from the floor with two turnovers.
Â
Cal State LA got 21 points from Nicole Flennaugh – all from hitting seven 3-pointers. Raya Smith added 11 points, and Anai Washington put up a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds off the bench.
Â
Stanislaus State next returns home for its final two games of the regular season. The Warriors host second-place Cal State East Bay on Thursday for Homecoming Night, then entertain Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday for Senior Night.
