Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Warriors Beat Toros Big to End Season on High Note

TURLOCK — There was enough momentum in the building Saturday that it'll be carrying over into 2022-23.

The Stanislaus State men's basketball team accentuated the end of its 2021-22 season by blowing out postseason-bound Cal State Dominguez Hills on Senior Night, using an explosive second half on offense to come back from being down double digits and beat the Toros, 77-58, at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.

The Warriors (10-13, 7-11 CCAA) trailed by 10 points 3 1/2 minutes into the second half and hadn't yet made a shot in the period, starting 0 for 7. Stanislaus State head coach Paul Trevor called an important timeout in between an and-one opportunity for Cal State Dominguez Hills (13-10, 10-7 CCAA), looking to calm everyone down and reset.

And reset, they did.

CSUDH's Chris Seeley missed his chance at a three-point play, and off went the Warriors. Stan State responded with a 17-2 run, erasing the 38-28 deficit and taking a five-point, 45-40 lead in a matter of four minutes. Will Pallesi hit three 3-pointers during the run, while Benno Zecic had three assists, three rebounds, a steal and two made free throws. The Warriors went 6 for 8 shooting after starting the half 0 for 7.

The Toros managed to tie it 80 seconds later with consecutive buckets, but Stan State wasn't done. The Warriors took off on a 13-2 run over a span of less than three minutes, making five of six shots, punctuated by one of what would be three dunks by Marlon Short.

The game was over at that point, with all the momentum on Stan State's side CSUDH wouldn't get closer than seven, as the Warriors outscored them, 32-13, over the game's last 11 minutes. Pallesi and Tony Singleton combined for five 3-pointers and Short threw down three dunks – including a reverse slam and an alley oop from Singleton – to keep the energy on the home side of the floor.

Stanislaus State shot 52.9% in the second half alone, which included a 47.1% clip (8 for 17) from 3-point distance. CSUDH shot just 32.4% for the game and was 1 for 9 from deep after halftime. The Warriors were almost perfect at the free-throw line, making 10 of 11 (90.9%).

Stanislaus State reached double-digit victories (10) in a season for the fourth consecutive year – all under head coach Paul Trevor. The Warriors have now beaten the Toros in seven of their last eight meetings inside Fitzpatrick Arena, dating to 2014. After starting the season 4-9, Stan State won six of its last 10 games, including three in a row to end the year.

Singleton led all players with 21 points, the fifth 20-point game of his freshman season. Pallesi finished the year with his highest scoring game at 19 points. Short poured in 12 points, while Zecic had an all-around performance with eight rebounds, seven assists, five points and a steal.

The Warriors honored their lone senior, Luis Salgado, in a pregame ceremony. Salgado, who came to Stanislaus State in 2018 after attending both San Diego City and San Diego Christian colleges, concluded his career with four points, four rebounds and three assists.

Colton Kresl led Cal State Dominguez Hills with 16 points and three steals. Hunter Seymore had a game-high 12 rebounds, including five on the offensive end, to go with his two points, two assists and two blocks.
