TURLOCK — Like they have all season long, the Stanislaus State women's basketball team never quit fighting until the end Saturday.
Â
But four would-be game-winning shots in the final 10 seconds all barely missed, as Cal State Dominguez Hills eliminated the Warriors from postseason contention by escaping with a 56-55 California Collegiate Athletic Association win at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.
Â
Da'Myiah Lewis' running floater with nine seconds on the clock bounced off the rim, but she fought for the loose ball and earned the jump ball offensive rebound, as the possession arrow favored the Warriors. On the inbound,
Taylor Pilot drove into the paint and dished the ball off to
Liliana Marques, who had been the Warriors' leading scorer all game.
Â
Marques' first attempt was swatted back down by Deejanae Poland, but she grabbed it and went back up with the ball. That try hit the bottom of the rim, where Lewis grabbed it and tried to put it back in the hoop, but her layup rolled around the back of the rim and back off the front as the buzzer sounded, giving CSUDH the one-point victory.
Â
The loss eliminated the Warriors (12-10, 7-9 CCAA) from qualifying for next week's CCAA Tournament, ending their season. Stanislaus State needed to win to get in, after Sonoma State beat Cal State LA earlier in the day.
