SAN RAFAEL — A competitive match with ups and downs went to the hosts Sunday, as Dominican used a strong showing in singles to come away with a 5-2 win over the Stanislaus State women's tennis team at the Castellucci Family Tennis Center.
Â
The Warriors (2-3) swept the doubles competition, winning all three matches, to earn the doubles point and start the afternoon with a 1-0 lead.
Amber Huk and Sylvana Talamantes won at No. 1 doubles, 6-3.
Annabelle Mulick teamed with
Alyssa Tay to win at No. 2 doubles, 6-2.
Kate Bolton and
Maya Young completed the sweep with a 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot.
Â
The Penguins (4-3) came out swinging in singles, but also caught some breaks and won some close matches that could have gone either way. An early retirement by Bolton at No. 3 singles tied the match at 1-1. Zoe Coggins (No. 6) and Julia Rydel (No. 5) won their singles matches for the Penguins to put them up 3-1.
Â
Mulick stepped up and won a three-set match at No. 2 singles, beating Gina Dudley to make it 3-2 in the team competition. Huk came from behind to push her No. 1s match to a third set, and even in the deciding set, an additional game was needed to determine the winner, but Audrey Rafols finally emerged victorious by scores of 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. That clinched the dual for Dominican at 4-2.
Â
Finally, Talamantes also gave a hard-fought, three-set battle to Dominican's Gigi Alajeely at No. 4 singles. Talamantes won the first set, 6-4, only to fall in the next two sets by identical scores, as Alajeely came from behind to win the match, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Â
The Warriors next host NCAA Division I opponent Nevada on Saturday, then host PacWest Conference opponent Fresno Pacific on Sunday for a rematch from Feb. 19 in Fresno.
